Ingredients (Serves 2–3)
- Basmati rice – 1 cup
- Water – 2 cups
- Olive oil or butter – 1–2 tsp
- Garlic – 2 cloves, minced
- Onion – 1 small, finely chopped (optional)
- Fresh herbs – 2 tbsp each of your choice (parsley, cilantro, basil, thyme, or dill)
- Salt – ½ tsp (adjust to taste)
- Black pepper – ¼ tsp
- Lemon juice – 1 tsp (optional, for freshness)
Instructions
- Rinse the rice under cold water until water runs clear. Drain well.
- Cook the rice:
- In a pot, heat olive oil or butter over medium heat.
- Add garlic (and onion if using) and sauté until fragrant.
- Add the rice and toast for 1–2 minutes.
- Pour in water, add salt, and bring to a boil.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes or until water is absorbed.
- Add herbs:
- Remove from heat and let the rice sit, covered, for 5 minutes.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and gently mix in finely chopped fresh herbs.
- Drizzle with lemon juice if desired and season with black pepper.
Tips
- For extra flavor, you can add a small bay leaf while cooking.
- Use a mix of fresh and dried herbs if fresh ones aren’t available.
- Toasting the rice lightly before boiling gives a nutty aroma.
