  • 1 cup green gram (moong dal), washed and soaked for at least 30 minutes
  • 2 tablespoons oil or ghee
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit lengthwise
  • 1 teaspoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • Water as needed

Instructions:

  1. Heat oil or ghee in a pressure cooker or a deep pan.
  2. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  3. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and slit green chilies. Sauté for a minute.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  6. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, cumin powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well and cook for a couple of minutes.
  7. Drain the soaked green gram and add it to the cooker.
  8. Add enough water to cover the green gram.
  9. Close the lid and pressure cook for about 3-4 whistles or until the green gram is cooked well.
  10. Once the pressure releases, open the lid and check the consistency of the curry. If it’s too thick, add more water and adjust the seasoning.
  11. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
