Moringa Leaf Medley

  • 2 cups moringa leaves (murunga keerai), washed and stems removed
  • 1 tablespoon oil (coconut oil or vegetable oil)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 green chilies, slit (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon red chili powder (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup grated coconut (optional, for garnish)


  1. Prepare the Moringa Leaves:
  • Wash the moringa leaves thoroughly and remove them from the stems. Set aside.
  1. Heat the Oil:
  • In a large pan or skillet, heat the oil over medium heat.
  1. Temper the Spices:
  • Add the mustard seeds to the hot oil. Once they start to splutter, add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
  1. Sauté Aromatics:
  • Add the finely chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn translucent.
  • Add the minced garlic and slit green chilies. Sauté for another 1-2 minutes until the raw smell of garlic disappears.
  1. Add Spices:
  • Stir in the turmeric powder and red chili powder (if using). Mix well.
  1. Cook the Moringa Leaves:
  • Add the moringa leaves to the pan. Stir well to combine with the spices and onions.
  • Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the leaves are wilted and tender.
  1. Season and Garnish:
  • Add salt to taste and mix well.
  • If using, add the grated coconut and mix thoroughly. Cook for another 1-2 minutes.
  1. Serve:
  • Transfer the Moringa Leaf Medley to a serving dish. Serve hot as a side dish with rice or roti.
